I cannot connect to xbox live!!

This is what I do.

My ethernet cable is in the back of my 360 , it goes into the back of my modem. Sometimes it works , sometimes it doesent.
What can I do to get it to work all the time cos its real annoying.

what does it say on the screen when u try to connect to xbox live?

I test it ,and it says disconnected the first one. When its properly connected
