I'm sure there was a thread on this aages ago...
Anyway, this might help you with facts and figures: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_punishment_in_the_United_Kingdom

I think that the Death Sentence should be brought back, but, in a way that is insulting, like animal euthanasia, or the slow and painful.
Life Sentences should be life, until you die, than 25 years.

I think Capital punishment should only be applied to people who have commited murder.
If they have taken someone else's life, I think that it is fair to do the same to them.

But then the government who take the murderer's life is no better than the murderer himself. Should the government then be capitally punished?

That's my view.
I don't really agree with the death sentence, some people change over time and some people don't - if you kill them then you're never going to find out. I do think life sentences are ridiculous though, it should actually mean life.

Yeah, life should mean a hundred years without parole.

I also think that a lot of people are jailed when they could be given different punishments. Apparently our prisons are full to bursting, but surely we should only lock up the people who are a threat to society i.e. murderers, child abusers, sex offenders, terrorists, gun and knife gangs....

Yeh, you 2 have changed my opinion.
I agree some people CAN change over time, and they deserve a second chance, and, as Fizzy said, Prison sentances for life should actually mean life.

i think its too risky. As alot of mistakes can be made people could be falsly imprisoned and have there lifes taken when they might not of been guilty. So at least if they find out a mistake has hapen they release the innocent person from prison. If they were killed for a mistake well i think you get my point.

I'm doing this in English at the moment too - did you know that over 30 years after they'd been hanged, 8 Korean men were acquitted of the murder they'd been charged with. That's just shameful.

I even don't agree that Sadam Hussein was hung.

Personally, I think that we should bring back the death sentence.
Its cases such as the Garry Newlove one, which show us why we should have it.
Read the story Here
Also, I think that people opinions are based on whether they are close to someone who has been murdered.
If it was your father that was kicked to death, I am sure that you would be backing a change in the law for the death penalty.
The problem with todays society, is we are too soft on the criminals.
They commit a murder, and then got to prison for life, which means they will be free in around 15 years!
Also, whilst in prison, they have luxuries such as TV's etc, so, although their freedom has been revoked for a few years, it is not exactly "hard" time.
The other two points to consider also are:
1. If the offender is sent to prison, for life, then it costs the taxpayer money to keep him or her there.
Why keep them there, if there is conclusive proof (ie. DNA) that they are the murderer? We should have a system similiar to the US, a "death row", where they get the chance to appeal, if they believe that they are innocent, and if they lose that appeal, based on solid evidence, then they should be executed.
2. People may well change, over time. However, does a 16 year old murdered outside of school get the same chance? No.
Why let someone who took another life, the chance to prove they have changed?
Also, if they criminals were executed, it would be classed as lawful murder, by the government, as it is a punishment to the crime.
The same argument could be said for keeping someone in prison, against their wishes.
If you or I held someone against their will, then it is illegal. However, as a punishment, on HM orders, it is lawful.
Just my own opinions, but would be interested to read other people views on what I have written.

In what way do you mean? Are you saying he wasn't realy hung and he's still alive...... Or you believe he's been hung and you didn't agree with it?
On a personal level I think with the advances of DNA then the likely hood of a mistake is very small indeed...So for the most evil of crimes the death sentence should be bought back!

He was definately hung, it was on YouTube
I don't agree with the death penalty so I don't think he should have been hung, that's what I meant.
Obviously I don't agree with the horrible things he did in his life, but I just don't agree with the death penalty because to me it doesn't seem right to punish someone with their own crime kinda thing.
Yeah cuddlyewok jails should be changed back to actual jails and not holiday apartments, they shouldn't have TVs and stuff - some people can't afford a TV in their own homes!

Hanged.*
Still, I think it should be brought back, because some people won't learn, no motter how much we ant to kid ourselves, and it is murder AND manslaughter if they release a murderer and he kills again. Think about it.

Fizzy

Whilst I don't believe in the death penalty, I still believe that life should mean life unless solid evidence suggests innocence later on.
In the newspaper the other day, a man was jailed for 'life' for physically and sexually abusing his baby who consequently died. I bet he will only get 15 years or so, they'll probably let him out for some reason or another

Which is why life in prison should mean life in prison. However, this can actually be seen as a living death - in Italy, last year, 311 people serving life sentences actually asked to be executed.
I still don't think that murder committed by the government can be classed as "lawful". The person who committed the homicide may have considered that he himself was punishing the person he killed for something, much in the same way that the government would then punish him.

Ah Fizzy, you mean this film on youtube that conclusively proves he was hung and it wasn't all just a conspirey!! lol.

I can see where you're coming from with what you are saying, but surely a life for a life must apply for 'certain' 'proven' crimes.

No, I saw the mobile phone video footage on YouTube that somebody secretly took whilst inside the room they hanged him in. It showed him being prepared to be hanged with the rope around his neck, and him dictating various 'last words' in his own language, and then presumably it showed them drop him but I didn't want to watch any further.
I still agree with Jack, real life imprisonment should be the answer. It should be real prison, with no luxuries and limited brain stimulants. I think the death penalty is the easy way out for people who commit horrible crimes, life imprisonment would be torture. Yes you would still be alive, but what sort of life is it to have the same basic routine day in and day out and not know what is happening on the outside. A life without being around your friends and family, in fact a life knowing that your friends and family perhaps no longer love you because of what you've done. Nothing to look forward to, nothing to achieve, and knowing you will eventually die in prison. It would kill you mentally, surely that is more of a punishment.

Oh I agree with that sentiment Fizzy, all you have to do is give them the URL to some swapitshop forums to sign upto, they'll be brain dead in no tim ( Not this one I may add )
Seriously though, I don't think prisons are has cushy as the media makes them out to be. I think given the choice some one doing life would rather be put out of their misery, and hung, than spend 30 plus years in a prison.....
|
Fizzy
|
Well then that is their choice isn't it. If somebody is imprisoned for life and wants to kill themselves, then that should be up to them.

In certain ways I agree and in certain ways I don't.
Some people deserve death penelty, while some don't.
It all depends upon the situation.
But in terms of a life sentence, it should be for life, not 25 years.

Yes, as stated earlier, I do, in the right circumstances.
If the evidence is totally overwhelming, with DNA, and other forensic evidence, as was the case with Steve Wright, and Mark Dixie, then i see no problem with it.
To me, is is a total waste of taxpayers money, to keep them in a prison for the rest of their days, where they have comforts, such as TV, DVD's etc.
I think the best way is to put them on a "death row" style of wing, where they get the chance to appeal.
If the appeal is unsuccessful, then the death penalty should be administered.
To me, the death penalty should be imposed for murder only, and, as stated, only when there is overwhelming evidence against the accused.
If there is any doubt as to the accussed's guilt, then they should be kept on the death row, until such a time as they can prove their innocence, or the CPS can prove their guilt.
Also, for those who state that the government would be exactly the same as a murderer, if they executed someone, then you are wrong, and for two reasons.
One. The executiion would be done in a humane way. A lethal injection is very humane compared to what some of these murderers did to their victims.
Two. If the death penalty was brought back in to law, then it would be exactly that - Law. If you start to say that the government is guilty of murder, should they execute them, then why not go the whole hog, and state that they are also guilty of kidnap, and false imprisonment, as that is what they are currently doing - taking people (against their wishes) and holding them in a cell (again, against there wishes).
These are my views, and I would be interested to read other peoples.

If someone has taken someones life, than they should make up for it somehow, jail till death!

I Do agree with capital punishemnt and probably the death penalty, for those of you in the uk you will probably heard of the death of Sophie Lancaster.
She was a girl from a goth culture whom was walking in our town park at the early hours of one morning whena group of youths set upon sophie and her boyfriend, putting them both in coma's., sadly of which sophie never came out of and later died.
These youths have been cahrged guilty for murder and gbh. honestly i think these youths should be beaten to death themselves, for ruining a lot of peoples lives. i mean what brings people to do such things, such downright disgusting things..
|
Fizzy
|
I still think that proper life imprisonment with no luxuries and plain meals and limited interaction with people is more of a punishment than killing them.
Basically the bottom line is that jails need to be changed so they're less cushy, and sentences need to be longer.

I really don't know what the government/local bodies were thinking when they put luxuries like that in prisons. I bet there are thousands of kids out there who long for the day they get to play on a games console, yet these people who have committed awful crimes have them to play on daily in prison.
