Do Teachers push pupils too hard to get good grades?

I thought this was more a discussion/debate than school life topic, so I posted it here.

Recently, My friends and I have found the pressure from teachers too much to cope with. They're always saying "A*" "A*" "You got an A, that's not good enough. Your target grade's A*."

We feel that they're doing this because they want the school to look good and to get more funding from the government, not what the student actually feels pleased & comftable with, let alone what the student is actually capable of.

Yesterday, I was told to resit a physics exam, because I got a high B, not and A*, like my target grade. Me not being happy with this, my teacher said 'He was only thinking of me, and knew I was capable of getting A*' and I was like "Well you didn't think so on my last report" [on which he said I was not on target to achieve my target grade, A*] I am adament that I'm not going to resit the exam, as I was very pleased with my result, I was only about 2 marks of an A, and I felt peanalised and a failure by being asked to resit.

So, the question is, Do you think that teachers push students too hard to get good grades? Thoughts?

Not really.

My teachers help me sometimes, but not as much as they could.
They basicly say if you don't try yourself, you're not going to get good marks, When I am trying. ?

My teachers are annoying, especially my english teacher, "well you're at an A* at the moment with 37/40 for coursework, but you're going to do extra until you're at 40"

She actually said that

I feel that the teachers at our school do push people to do well but not too hard.  My teachers always told me if they felt I was capable of getting higher and offered help if I wanted it, unless of course someone is doing way under their potential and then there is a need to step in.

I find I sometimes do better when I'm being pushed to do better, depends on the way it's done.
