Violent video games

Violent video games - Should we ban or restrict the use of violent video games?

The debate about violent video games such as Mortal Kombat, Wolfenstein 3D and Doom has received a lot of attention since 1999 when two students of Columbine High School, Colorado, shot and killed 13 fellow pupils and finally themselves. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold enjoyed the bloody video game Doom and, according to many, were inspired by it. The debate over the destructive influence of video games even arrived at the US senate in 2000, when several researchers showed concern about the effect of violent video games on young people.
While we can learn much from existing research on other media types, research focusing on violent video games is very limited. Two studies by the psychologists Craig Anderson and Karen Dill, dealing with the effects of violent video games both in the laboratory and in real life are considered extremely important in the field.
Rating systems, adopted globally by the video game industry in 1994, established the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), a comprehensive labelling system that rates over 1,000 games per year and has now rated more than 8,000 games in total. Less than 1 per cent of all games released in the UK have been rated as suitable only for people 18 years or over.
In Europe, Germany has also moved towards a ban on violent video games after 16 people were killed in an Erfurt School in 2002.

So, my question I am putting to all the other members, is.... what are your thoughts on violent video games, and should they be restricted, or even banned?
Yxz

Violence is why people buy the games, people love 'shoot them up' games and blood and gor games, Game shops would be out of business if they couldnt sell them!

I don't think its the game that is the problem, maybe shops who sells the guns should have a restriction to who they sell them to? :S!

I Played Wolfenstein 3D When I Was Really Young On My 95 Computer Lol, I Dont Think It Was That Bad, Only Red Pixels Coming Down On The Screen lol.

I Think Its Fine As Long As People Who Play Them Know Its 'Just A Game' And Dont Copy Things In The Real World.

But it is the people who cannot differentiate fantasy from real, which give these types of games a bad name.

The same could be said for films.
Look at the Jamie Bulger murder (If you do not know, ask your parents).
The 2 lads that killed him had just watched the horror flick Child's Play, and when they murdered the 2 year old Jamie, they were re-inacting parts of the film.

Nowadays, as the systems are getting better, the graphics are becoming more realistic, which could lead to more "unstable" people failing to differentiate real life from the game they are playing.

I think it will be fine for a couple of years,I can tell the difference between taking out a Katana Sword (Red Steel,Wii) and a Kitchen knife anyone who doesn't know the difference just needs to be banned. It is stupid on pretending to children that there is no violence in the world,ok so the zombie stories are a bit far fetched but we can't hide our kids from the real world,if you think about it then it is showing what the real world can be like.

I agree with you Mario, i think it educates children about some dangers in the world, and in a way stops them doing it. Because 99% of them know that video game stuff shouldnt happen in real life i.e. spyro the dragon doesnt exist! (I know thats not violent, but they know its not real)
iliveinireland

I play violent games but i dont go around killing people!
Fizzy

It's scary how people can be so influenced or obsessed by something in films or games that they go ahead and reenact it in real life. Not long ago I read in the paper how someone was so obsessed with the Freddy Kruger character from Nightmare on Elm Street that they made replica clawed gloves out of knives and attacked their friend in the night, just like the film

It can't be the fault of the game or the film though, that these crimes are committed. If they were really that influencial then more of us would be committing such crimes surely? The people who do copy the games and the films do so because of mental issues, or personality disorders that make them interpret things and do things different to other people.

I think more should be done though to protect children from violent or unsuitable games and films, as I've known 10 year olds who happily play 18+ games and have seen 18 rated films. It's the parents' attitude and understanding that needs to be changed I think - parents need to be aware of what their children have access to.

Yeah , My mum and dad let me get them but they say dont do what they do on the games or im dead. Im not that stupid to hit people with bats and shoot people with guns.
gags

come on you would have to be stuped to shoot someone just because you saw it in a game
cuddlyewok

This may be the case, but it has been known for people to kill others, and the video game be to blame.
Just one example Here
humandalek91

I have nothing wrong with violent games. It's when they get into the wrong hands (people that aren't sensible in the sense that they copy the game and become violent themselves) if they are played properly by the right people then it's all fine. I think there are more things out there that are causing some people to turn violent than stupid computer games that have a bit of fighting in!
kenny

Eric and Dylan where screwed in the head, simple.
You have to have a mind set of a killer to be a killer
Games cant do that to you. American's went on a blame trip after columbine.
Natural Born Killers (Movie) Marilyn Manson (Music) and Doom/Wolf (All from ID) Took the blame, its self indulgent bull-crap and the public should feel ashamed for making accusations without proof. Try restricting drugs and Eric was supposed to be in jail but was let off due to mislaid paper work.
