TURKEY WIN SHOOTOUT TO REACH SEMISTurkey win shootout to reach semis
Fri 20 Jun, 10:34 PM
VIENNA (Reuters) - Turkey beat Croatia 3-1 in a penalty shootout on Friday after Hamit Altintop scored the decisive spot-kick to line up a Euro 2008 semi-final against Germany.
The shootout followed a heart-stopping end to their quarter-final when Ivan Klasnic's 119th minute strike looked to have won it for Croatia -- only for Turkey's Semih Senturk to rifle an equaliser to make it 1-1 in the second minute of stoppage-time.
Croatia had by far the better chances over 90 minutes. Striker Ivica Olic hit the bar from close range and Niko Kranjcar headed the rebound over in the 19th minute, while Ivan Rakitic, Darijo Srna and Olic all went close after the break.
Turkey looked the sharper side in extra time and will now play the Germans in the last four on Wednesday in Basel.
