Am I Old enough To Get A Job?

• If you’re under 14 it’s illegal for you to have a job.

• If you’re 14 or 15 you can work part-time, but the person you work for must get an employment permit for you from your Local Education Authority.

• If you’re under 18 it’s illegal for you to work where there’s alcohol or gambling, dangerous substances or heavy machinery.

How many hours a week can I work?

• If you’re under 16 you can’t work during school hours, before 7am or after 7pm or for more than one hour in the morning before school. You can work up to a total of 17 hours a week during term time.

• If you’re 15 or 16 you can work up to eight hours on Saturdays, two hours on Sundays and up to 35 hours per week during school holidays.

• If you’re 14 you can work up to five hours on Saturdays, two hours on Sundays and 25 hours per week during school holidays.

But remember, you don’t have to work this many hours each week, especially if it makes you fall behind at school.

What kind of job could I get?

Places like shops, restaurants, supermarkets, amusement parks and hotels often employ young people.

Other popular options are pet sitting/walking, fruit picking, plant watering, gardening, car washing and babysitting.

How much would I earn?

The minimum wage doesn’t apply until you’re 18, so don’t expect to make a mint.

Extra cash is always useful though and the experience you gain could be valuable later on.

I think 13 is the age you can work from.

You can do paper rounds at any age really, it doesn't really count as a part time job.
